HUNTSVILLE ? Totaling 24 hits in the two games, Sam Houston State swept a Southland Conference softball doubleheader from Southeastern Louisiana Friday afternoon, winning 6-1 and 4-3 at Bearkat Softball Complex.
Six different players each had RBIs in the first game as catcher Cassie Everitt led a 16-hit performance, going for-4 at the plate.
Pinch hitter Callie Wood's two-run double in the bottom of the sixth proved to be the winning run in the nightcap. Southeastern Louisiana rallied for two runs in the top of the seventh and had the bases loaded with one out. But shortstop Hailey Wiginton fielded a line drive and made the throw on a grounder for the final out to end the contest.
Morgan Mikulin was the winning pitcher in the first game and got the final two outs in the second for the save.
Sam Houston scored in each of the first three innings of the opener. Third baseman Sarah Parich's first-pitch double down the left field line scored pitcher Morgan Mikulin who reached on a Lion infield error in the first.
Sam Houston added another run in the second on a double to right field by first baseman Amy Brown. Center fielder Kendra Spivey scored after reaching on a fielder's choice and moving to second on a single by shortstop Hailey Wiginton.
Run-scoring singles by right fielder Alex Survant and Wiginton and a sacrifice fly by Spivey put the Kats up 5-0 in the third inning.
Mikulin (8-7) was the winning pitcher in the first game. She gave up six hits and struck out five. After the Lions' first two hits in the first inning, Mikulin returned 13 consecutive batters.
Catcher Allyson McCubbins accounted the Lions lone tally with a home run in the seventh inning. Catherine Gunter (8-9) was the losing pitcher. Jenna Yoder pitched in the final four innings in relief.
Whitney Wilson started the scoring for the Bearkats in the second game with a solo home run to right field in the fourth inning. The homer was Wilson's first of the season.
After Wilson's RBI single in the bottom of the second, pinch hitter Calli Wood's two-run single put the Bearkats ahead 4-1.A two-run double by center fielder Jordan Logan cut the lead to 4-3 in the top of the seventh.
Brandi Crnkovic (8-9) was the winning pitcher for the Kats in the nightcap.
The two teams will complete the Southland series with a 12 noon single game at Bearkat Softball Complex Saturday.
