DENTON - Colorado State edged Sam Houston 4-3 and Arkansas downed the Bearkats 12-1 in the Kat softball team's two games Friday at the University of North Texas Mean Green Classic.
In the day's opening game, SHSU scored three runs in the top of the sixth to go ahead 3-2 as sophomore outfielder Calie Wood tied the contest with a two-run single and senior catcher Ashley Nelson added another run with a single up the middle.
But Colorado State rallied in the bottom of the sixth as junior first baseman Chris Thomsen doubled and senior third baseman Allis Majam blasted a home run to center field.
Freshman second baseman Shelbi Tucker led off the top of the seventh with a single, but two infield outs and fly out to center field ended the contest with the sixth loss of the season for Sam Houston.
Morgan Mikulin (1-4) had another strong performance in the pitching circle, striking out four batters and holding Colorado State to just one hit in the first three innings. Sophomore designated hitter Rebecca Penland brought in the first tallies of the game with a two-run double in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Junior shortstop Hailey Wiginton led the Bearkats at the plate going 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles. Wiginton has hit safely in six of Sam Houston's seven games this season.
In her first game since returning from an injury, sophomore pitcher Tomi Garrison gave up eight hits and eight runs, four of which were unearned, in five and a third innings. Mikulin finished the game.
The Razorbacks broke open a 1-1 tie with a home run in the fourth inning and produced three more homers and three doubles during the last three frames. Junior first baseman Debbie Smith went 3-for-5 with five RBIs and two home runs.
Senior first baseman Amy Brown provided the Bearkats with their only run of the game with a solo homer in the bottom of the first inning. Sam Houston now stands 1-7 for the year.
