Kats lose two at Bearkat Classic

HUNTSVILLE — The Sam Houston State softball team lost both games during day two of the Bearkat Classic Saturday.
 
The Bearkats got solid production from the lineup but struggled in the circle to fall to 4-5 on the season.
 
SHSU closes the tournament Sunday against Loyola-Chicago at 12:15 p.m.
 
Game 2 • Providence 11, Sam Houston State 7
 
Sam Houston State scored five runs in the second inning to rally back from an early deficit in game two Saturday, but an 8-run fourth inning which featured two home runs was the difference.
 
Junior Bailey White doubled into the left-center field to start the second for the Kats after Providence scored two runs in the first. Junior Sheridan Fisher drove in a run with a single to right, and sophomore Kyndal Kutac added another run with a ground out to second.
 
Senior Megan McDonald made it 4-2 with a double down the left-field line, and senior Tiffany Thompson followed with an RBI single.

White hit an RBI double off the wall in left, and junior Brooke Malia hit a sacrifice fly for the Bearkats' final two runs in the seventh.
 
Game 1 • Loyola-Chicago 8, Sam Houston State 6
 
The Bearkats came up short of a late rally by scoring two runs in the seventh inning against the Ramblers Saturday afternoon.
 
Down 8-4, junior Bailey White walked to begin the bottom of the seventh. With two outs, sophomore Kyndal Kutac launched her first home run of the season over the wall in left-center field.
 
Senior Hunter Ervin was hit by a pitch to bring the tying run to the plate, but SHSU could not extend the game.
 
Loyola-Chicago took control of the game with four runs in the second and three more in the sixth.
 
Senior Megan McDonald hit a two-run double in the bottom of the sixth, and senior Tiffany Thompson followed with an RBI double. The Bearkats' other run came in the bottom of the first on an RBI single by junior Brooke Malia.
 
Junior Madilyn Weatherly, junior Sheridan Fisher and sophomore Alex Diaz all hit safely for Sam Houston State.
