ACU pulls away late to down Kats

HUNTSVILLE — Sam Houston could not overcome a fourth quarter deficit as Abilene Christian came away with a 74-68 victory at Johnson Coliseum on Tuesday night.

The Bearkats have now lost three in a row heading into the regular season finale at home on Wednesday against New Mexico State at 6:30 p.m. Sam Houston is now 12-15 on the season and 8-9 in WAC play as teams battle for seeding position for the conference tournament which begins Monday in Las Vegas.

Mikayla Woods led the Kats with 17 points and six rebounds, while Madelyn Batista posted another double-double with 16 points and 12 boards.

Sam Houston trailed by six early in the fourth quarter but battled back to tie the game.

Batista scored on a layup to cut the lead to four, and Kaylee Jefferson made a basket to make it 61-58 with just over seven minutes to go. The Wildcats responded with a 3-pointer, but Jefferson answered on the other end to allow Chyna Allen to tie the game at 64 with three minutes left.

ACU closed the game on 10-4 run to seal the victory.
