HUNTSVILLE — Two big innings doomed the Sam Houston softball team in a pair of losses to open the Bearkat Classic at the Bearkat Softball Complex on Friday.
The Bearkats (0-2) fell 7-3 in extra innings to Wichita State in game one then dropped the nightcap to UNLV 10-1.
Wichita State 7, Sam Houston 3 (8 inn.)
Sam Houston will go for its first win of the season Saturday, weather permitting, when it hosts UNLV at 1 p.m.
The Shockers struck first in game one on the first pitch of the game. Addie Barnard sent the offering from
Abigail Young over the wall in left-center field for a quick 1-0 lead.
Sam Houston was able to answer in the bottom of the frame.
Elia Hebel reached on an infield single that took a bad hop on the second baseman and eventually came around to score on a single by
Julia Herzinger.
Wichita State came back to retake the lead with a solo home run in the top of the third. An RBI double by
Brodie Quinlan tied it once again for the Kats.
Ellie Grill gave the Bearkats their first lead when she singled in
Tricia Yarotsky in the fourth only to have the Shockers tie it at 3 on another solo shot. Wichita State sealed the victory with four runs in the top of the eighth.
UNLV 10, SHSU 1 (6 inn.)
The Rebels exploded for six runs in the first inning en route to a 10-1 victory over the Kats to conclude day one.
UNLV added another run in the second before Sam Houston was able to scratch across a run in the bottom of the inning.
Brodie Quinlan singled up the middle to lead off and came around to score on an RBI double by
Allie Saville.
The Rebels added a run in the fifth and two in the sixth to put the run-rule into effect.
