HUNTSVILLE — Freshman
Amy Abke was close to unhittable in the circle to lead Sam Houston to a 3-0 victory over Middle Tennessee in game one of a Conference USA series at Bearkat Softball Complex on Friday.
Abke held the Blue Raiders hitless through the first two innings in an game that did not feature any offense early. She scattered four hits over seven innings with a pair of strikeouts to improve to 6-6 on the season.
The Bearkats (13-23, 2-11 CUSA) finally backed Abke with some run support in the fourth inning thanks to the bats of
Elia Hebel and
Julia Herzinger.
Haleigh Carter got the rally started with a lead-off single, and Hebel quickly brought her home with a double into the left-center field gap for what would prove to be the game-winning run. Herzinger increased the deficit to 3-0 when she blasted a two-run home run to right-center field with one out.
Abke closed the door on Middle Tennessee over the next three frames as Sam Houston snapped a four-game losing streak.
The two teams will wrap up the three-game series with a doubleheader on Saturday, beginning at 3:30 p.m.
