HUNTSVILLE — Sam Houston surged past Kennesaw State in an 8-3 victory at the Bearkat Softball Complex on Saturday.
The Bearkats (16-15, 5-3) clinched the three-game CUSA series with late offensive action a day after shutting the Owls out in the opener.
Bella Perez smashed her seventh home run of the season to kick off a four-run sixth inning as Sam Houston seized control of the contest.
Kinsey Hobbs hit an RBI single to deep center and advanced to second on the throw. Kyla Heine laid down a sacrifice bunt but reached safely on an errant throw by the pitcher, allowing Allie Saville to score for another run.
Brodie Quinlan put the ball in play and froze the defense as Hobbs crossed home plate for the final run of the game.
The Owls struck first with an RBI single before Quinlan roped a two-run double into center in the bottom of the third to put the Kats up 2-1.
Kennesaw State added two more runs in the fifth, but defensive miscues allowed two Bearkats to score in the bottom half of the inning.
Kendall Daniel (5-2) earned the win, coming on in relief in the fifth with two runners on and recording back-to-back strikeouts to escape the jam. She finished with four strikeouts and allowed one hit in 2 2/3 innings.
Abigail Young started for the Kats, going 4 1/3 innings while allowing three runs on eight hits with two strikeouts.
Sam Houston wraps up the series Sunday, with first pitch set for 11:30 a.m. Live stats will be available on StatBroadcast.
