HUNTSVILLE — Sam Houston did not let UTEP hold a lead for long in a 4-2 victory Saturday at Bearkat Softball Complex.
The Bearkats (21-21, 9-7 CUSA) were outhit but found ways to outplay the Miners with timely hitting and aggressive base running.
Bella Perez went 3-for-3 with three RBIs and her 11th home run of the season — a solo shot in the sixth inning to give Sam Houston an insurance run.
UTEP struck first with a solo homer in the opening frame, but the Bearkats responded in the bottom half with a Perez RBI single to tie it.
In the top of the third, right fielder Brodie Quinlan threw out a runner at the plate to end the inning and keep it tied 1-1.
Jenny Robison gave Sam Houston the lead in the third with an RBI single, and Perez followed with another RBI single to center field to make it 3-1.
The Miners added their final run in the fourth.
Starter Abigail Young (5-5) earned the win, allowing two runs on seven hits with four strikeouts.
The Bearkats will look to take the series against UTEP on Saturday. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. and will be followed via StatBroadcast.
