JACKSONVILLE, Ala. – Sam Houston dropped a 5-3 decision to Jacksonville State on Friday at Jana McGinnis Field.
The Bearkats (25-24, 12-10 CUSA) struggled to overcome wet field conditions in the series opener, committing four errors that led to three unearned runs.
The Gamecocks took an early 2-0 lead with a run in each of the first two innings, both unearned.
Sam Houston answered with a three-run third inning. Elia Hebel drove in the first run with an RBI single, and Jenny Robison followed with a two-run triple to give the Bearkats a 3-2 advantage.
Jacksonville State regained the lead in the fourth, capitalizing on Sam Houston's fourth error on a potential double-play attempt to score two more runs and go up 4-3.
The Gamecocks added an insurance run in the sixth to close out the scoring despite a strong effort in the circle by Kendall Daniel. She took the loss to fall to 7-7 on the season, allowing seven hits and two earned runs in the start.
Sam Houston will look to even the series on Saturday. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. on ESPN+.
