Bearkat Bites
- Thanks to a 94-56 victory over Southwestern (Texas) on Thursday, head coach Jason Hooten earned his 160th career victory. All of his wins have come from Sam Houston State after he took over the helm in 2010. Hooten is the third-winningest coach in program history behind Bob Marlin (225-131) and Archie Porter (189-124).
- Junior transfer Kai Mitchell ranks 29th in the nation with 11.5 rebounds per game. In his first outing as a Bearkat, he recorded Sam Houston’s first double-double of the season thanks to a 14-point, 13-rebound performance on opening night. Mitchell grabbed 10 more boards against Southwestern on Thursday and leads the league with 23 rebounds on the season.
- As a team, Sam Houston leads the Southland Conference with 107 rebounds. Mitchell paces the Kats with 23 boards and newcomer RJ Smith follows closely behind with 18 – which ranks fourth in the league. Cameron Delaney has raked in 10 rebounds and Albert Almanza has tallied 11.
- Sam Houston’s defense on Thursday night held Southwestern to just 56 points – the least amount of points allowed since the Kats ground out a 57-54 victory over New Orleans last season.
- In just his second game as a Bearkat, freshman Zach Nutall led the Sam Houston offense with 15 points. The newcomer went 6-10 from the field and sunk one shot beyond the three-point arc. He tallied three steals and one assist in the contest.
- Senior Cameron Delaney knocked down a career-high 21 points against ETBU on Tuesday. The Harker Heights, Texas, native put in 27 minutes on the court, going .571 from the field and was a perfect 2-for-2 from the free-throw line.
- With Sam Houston’s 85-64 victory over East Texas Baptist, the Bearkats have won their season opener for the third consecutive year. The first-game win streak began in 2016-17 with a 104-57 win over LeTourneau and rolled on last season when the Kats halted UT-Tyler 91-51.
- The Bearkats’ 94-point performance marked the highest number of points scored since the 2016-17 season. The last time Sam Houston scored more than 94 points was on Dec. 19, 2016, when the Kats downed Randall 119-81 in Huntsville, Texas.
