Kats Set to Host Alabama State on Tuesday

HUNTSVILLE – With three games left on the 2018 calendar, the Sam Houston State men’s basketball team (3-7) looks to flip its momentum as it hosts Alabama State on Tuesday, Dec. 18, in a 6:30 p.m. contest at Johnson Coliseum.

- The Bearkats have posted better statistics than the Hornets in several categories, including points per game (69.1-66.6), field goal percentage (40.5%-39.0%) and free-throw percentage (72.7%-63.1%)
- Scoring three points against the Rams, senior Albert Almanza made the 100th appearance of his career at Colorado State on Saturday, Dec. 8. The only other Bearkat on the squad to surpass 100 games played is Josh Delaney, who has made 108 appearances.
- Sam Houston ranks second in the league with 80 made three-pointers. Senior twins Cameron and Josh Delaney lead the team with 16 made treys apiece while Chad Bowie, Albert Almanza
and RJ Smith have each knocked down 10. - The last season Sam Houston Started off its first 10 games at 3-7 was in the 2011-12 season. The Kats ground out wins against Howard Payne, Dallas Christian
and Paul Quinn. - The Bearkats rank third in the league with a total of 374 rebounds over 10 games. Sam Houston also ranks third with 253 defensive rebounds and fourth with 121 boards on offense.
- Josh Delaney, who has tallied 156 three-pointers over the course of his career, ranks seventh in the Bearkat record books in career threes. Delaney is just 25 made treys away from catching Derrick Preston (181) in sixth.
- Two Bearkats – Kai Mitchell and RJ Smith – rank in the Southland top 10 for rebounding. Mitchell leads Sam Houston and ranks fifth in the league with 67 boards while Smith ranks 10th with 60 rebounds.
- After making 101 free throws, the Bearkats rank fourth in the league with a 72.7 free-throw percentage. The Bearkats have taken the second-least amount of free-throw attempts in the league, taking just 18 more than Nicholls (121). Cameron Delaney leads the Bearkats with 24 free throws.
- Newcomer Chad Bowie tied for sixth in the league with 17 steals this season. Averaging 25.2 minutes per game, Bowie also leads the crew with 33 assists.
Series History
Alabama State – tied 1-1
Meeting first in 1992, the Bearkats and Hornets sit in a 1-1 all-time series tie. Alabama State came away with an 82-75 win in the inaugural meeting and Sam Houston State claimed the second matchup 71-49 in Huntsville.
