Since its dedication on Feb. 9, 1976, Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum has been the home of Sam Houston men's and women's basketball and volleyball. The arena is one of the toughest places to play in the Southland Conference, as evident by men's basketball's 46-game non-conference win streak on its home floor that lasted from 1998 to 2008.
Sam Houston completed a fan-friendly upgrade to Johnson Coliseum in 2016 that included three major upgrades. The first part included a new Daktronics video board that was installed in 2015. The board is 17 feet, 9.3 inches tall by 31 feet, 1.6 inches wide with a 10 mm video display. It also includes the capability for live video, sports statistics, timing and scoring information.
In 2016 even more was added on. Season ticket holders have been treated to new telescopic seating in the lower courtside level as well as a new Bearkat Champions Basketball Club area.
The biggest changes to the Coliseum came in 2016 in support of the student-athletes and coaches. The training room and locker rooms had a complete overhaul, with the installation of new lockers, meeting areas and video equipment. The training room space more than tripled, including the addition of a brand new hydrotherapy area. Additionally, a new court was installed, replacing a floor that was nearly 30 years old.
