Michael McIver Golf Training Center
Having opened in April of 2008, the Michael McIver Golf Training Center is a state-of-the-art, 1,800-square foot building is equipped with two hitting bays, V-1 swing analysis software and a lounge and is used by the Sam Houston men’s and women’s golf team and the PGA Golf Management Program. teeing area.
In addition to the McIver Training Center, there is a practice green, pitching and chipping areas, a practice bunker and expansive teeing area.
McIver, a Texas real estate executive and former Bearkat golfer donated the funds to construct the $350,000 facility. Born in Madisonville, McIver and his family moved to Palestine where, at age 16, McIver took up golf. He played in high school then served two years in Vietnam as a decorated combat soldier, receiving a Purple Heart.
After service to his country, he returned home to attend Sam Houston State where he played on the men’s golf team for head coach Ronnie Choate.
In 1983, McIver and his brother Jimmy established the James M. McIver Memorial Golf Scholarship in memory of their father. It was the first scholarship endowment created for the golf program.
The Michael McIver Golf Training Center is located near the practice range at the Raven Nest Golf Club on the west side of Interstate Highway 35 southwest of Sam Houston main campus.
With the combination of the McIver and Steele facilities, the Bearkat Golf facilities feature over 4,800 square feet of space. That is the largest golf facility in the Southland Conference and one of the largest in the region.
