Schardein was the first Bearkat woman student-athlete to win a Southland Conference track individual championship. She won the league's indoor two-mile run in 1988 and the Southland outdoor 5,000 meter championship in both 1988 and 1990. Schardein earned All-Southland Conference honors eight times during her career. She won two regular season meets in SHSU's inaugural cross country season in 1987 and still holds the Bearkat school record in the 5,000 meters outdoors
