Stewart competed for the track and field team from 1996 to 1999. Stewart was a three-time champion in the pole vault indoors in 1997, 1998 and 1999 and took bronze as a freshman in 1996. His mark of 17-1/2 in 1998 was an NCAA Indoor Provisional qualifying mark and at the time set the new school record. Outdoors he won Southland titles in 1997 and 1998 and took silver in 1999. He twice qualified for the NCAA Championships finishing 12^thin 1997 and 18^thin 1999.
