DAY TWO
Freshman Brittanie Wallace sparked a come from behind victory in the first game, but South Dakota State bounced back pull out the next three games to edge Sam Houston State in the final match of the tournament and earn the runner-up spot in the Domino's Pizza/SHSU Invitational Saturday.
Tulane, with a perfect 4-0 record in the event, took the team championship. The Green Wave lost only one game in their four matches in the tournament. Sam Houston State finished third with a 2-2 mark.
With Sam Houston down 16-13 in the opening game, the Bearkats won 12 consecutive points on Wallace's serce with the freshman totaling four aces during the streak. That gave Sam Houston a 24-16 lead. But South Dakota State stormed back to event the game at 29-29. Wallace served another ace to put SHSU 31-30. The Bearkats eventually won the first stanza 34-32.
Each of the next three games were close, but the Jackrabbits ran off game victories of 30-27 30-22 30-26 to win the match. During all four games, there were 26 ties and 13 lead changes. Wallace ended the evening with seven service aces.
Cynthia Yarotsky led Sam Houston with 20 kills while Sarah Hazlewood and Launa McClung each added 11. McClung led the Bearkats with five blocks
Yarotsky and Anna Ferguson were selected to the Domino's Pizza/SHSU Invitational All-Tournament team. Unfortunately, Ferguson went down with a knee injury Friday and her status for the rest of the season is doubtful.

Sam Houston's front line combination of senior Cynthia Yarotsky and freshmen Brittanie Wallace, Sarah Hazlewood, and Launa McClung proved too strong for Louisiana-Lafayette as the Bearkats needed only an hour and 16 minutes to polish off the Rajun' Cajuns in three games Saturday morning in SHSU's third match of the Domino's Pizza Classic.
The Bearkats won 30-26 30-22 30-20 as Yarotsky, Wallace, Hazlewood, and McClung combined for 33 kills and 10 blocks. Sam Houston totaled 48 kills with Yarotsky knocking down 16 and McClung 13. McClung added six blocks
The Sam Houston offense committed only 13 hitting errors and, led by McClung with three, served 11 aces.
Junior setter Megan McNamara ran the floor for Sam Houston in the first two games, collecting 26 assists, while freshman Kym Loving took over in the third game and assisted on 12 Bearkat points.
In Saturday's first game, Tulane remained undefeated for the season and in the tournament with a three-game victory over Texas-Pan American.
DAY ONE
Led by senior Cynthia Yarotsky and freshman Brittanie Wallace, Sam Houston State split on the first day of the Domino's Pizza/Sam Houston State Invitational volleyball tournament.
The Bearkats defeated Texas-Pan American 3-2 in their first match, then fell in three to Tulane in the nightcap.
Yarotsky and Wallace each totaled 28 kills in the two contests. Yarotsky was the top scored in the loss to Tulane with 11 kills. Wallace led the Bearkats in the UTPA victory with 18.
With the victory over Sam Houston combined with a four-game win over South Dakota State, Tulane upped its record to 5-0. The Green Wave is the only team in the tournament to go unbeaten on the first day. Texas-Pan American defeated Louisiana-Lafayette in three in the tournament's opening match. South Dakota State defeated the Rajun Cajuns in three in the tournament's fourth contest.
Sam Houston had to rally from two games to one down to defeat UTPA 30-24 31-33 23-30 30-24 15-12 in their first match of the season. Anna Ferguson added 15 kills and Huntsville product Sarah Hazlewood led the team with five blocks.
The Bearkats came close to extending Tulane to four games. Down two games to none, the Bearkats had the third game knotted at 30-30 and were serving but the Green Wave escaped with a win.
Sam Houston will play Louisiana-Lafayette at 11:30 a.m. and South Dakota State at 7 p.m. Saturday to complete this weekend's action.
