HUNTSVILLE ? Two points away from defeat, down 13-10 in the fifth set, Sam Houston State won five straight downs to earn a Southland Conference victory over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Friday night at Johnson Coliseum.
Haley Thomas powered a kill for the sideout, then the Kats won four points in a row on Jamie Kaleh's serve to earn a 23-25 28-26 25-23 21-25 15-13 victory.
The win lifts Sam Houston to 7-13 for the season and 2-2 in Southland Conference play. The Islanders fall to 3-11 for the year and 1-3 in league action.
“I knew this was going to be a tough one,” SHSU head coach Brenda Gray said. “A&M Corpus Christi is a really scrappy team. They went five games with division leader UTSA. You think you've got a kill and they keep it in play. Our girls just kept fighting and we pulled out a close one.”
Three Bearkats produced double digit kills as Anna Ferguson had 20, Thomas 19 and Brittanie Wallace 10.
The statistics reflect the closeness of the match. Sam Houston totaled 67 kills and Corpus Christi had 66. During the five sets, the two teams were tied 38 times.
Sam Houston State had an opportunity to win in four sets as the Kats, up two sets to one, held a 21-20 lead. But the Islanders rolled off five straight points to send the match into five.
Kym Loving totaled 63 assists as the Bearkats setter. Ferguson added five blocks.
Sam Houston State will play host to Southland Conference West Division leader Texas-San Antonio Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m. at Johnson Coliseum.
