Bearkats post record athletic GPA again

Director of athletics Bobby Williams and associate athletic director for student services Chris Thompson announced the academic performances Thursday.
In addition, 69 student-athletes from fall sports teams (football, soccer, volleyball and cross country) were named to the 2008 fall semester Southland Conference Commissioner's Academic Honor Roll. Seven Bearkats were either first or second team Academic All-SLC selections in football, soccer and volleyball and 18 student-athletes from those sports were honorable mention Academic All-SLC.
The 2.94 overall GPA marks the 33rd consecutive semester for Sam Houston State athletes to produce an average of 2.30 or higher. Every semester since the spring of 1996, the Kats have posted averages higher than 2.5. The 2.94 average this fall replaces the previous record high of 2.93 during the spring of 2008.
“Chris Thompson and her staff in academics do a great job each year of coordinating our student-athletes' efforts in the classroom,” Williams said. “We take as much pride in our student-athletes' academic performances as we do in their accomplishments in the arena. Each year these young men and women seem to raise the bar for themselves.”
Four Sam Houston teams produced grade point averages of better than 3.0 during the 2008 fall semester. Women's tennis led all squads with a 3.48 GPA followed by volleyball 3.33, softball 3.31 and soccer 3.28. Twenty Bearkats produced perfect 4.0 grade point marks with 153 semester GPAs of 3.0 or better.
The spring SLC Commissioner's honor roll list (including baseball, softball, tennis, golf, basketball and track and field) will be released in June. Each of the past four years, Sam Houston has placed more student-athletes on the Southland Conference Commissioner's Academic Honor Roll for all sports than any of the 11 other SLC members. To earn a spot on the honor roll, an athlete must maintain a 3.0 overall grade point average.
“This is such a tremendous accomplishment by our student-athletes.,” Thompson said. “They take a lot of pride in their achievements both on the playing field and in the classroom and are such outstanding representatives for Sam Houston State University and Huntsville, Texas. Also, credit must go to our coaches who bring these quality student-athletes onto our campus. This fall, we're tied for most 4.0 student-athletes in the Southland and, with our spring sports squads' academic quality, we feel we're in a good position to take league academic honors again in 2009.”
