INDIANAPOLIS ? Sam Houston State University was one of 35 Division I member institutions who received notice today of their successful completion of the NCAA's second cycle of athletics certification.
The purpose of athletics certification is to ensure integrity in the institution's athletics program and to assist institutions in improving their athletics departments. NCAA legislation mandating athletics certification was adopted in 1993.
“This is an exciting day for our athletic program here at Sam Houston ,” Bearkat director of athletics Bobby Williams said. “Successful completion of the certification process represents a great deal of hard work by members of our athletic and university staff over the last year.”
Sam Houston received its first certification in 1998, Williams' first year as athletic director. The current certification period is for the next 10 years.
“One of our most important goals at Sam Houston is to run a program in strict compliance with NCAA rules,” Williams said. “I am extremely honored to have completed this process twice in my tenure. This honor reflects the dedication of our administration, athletic staff and coaches to doing things the right way.”
The certification process, under the direction of the NCAA Division I Committee on Athletics Certification, involves a self-study led by an institution's president or chancellor and a visit by an NCAA Peer Review team. The studies include a review of these primary components: governance and commitment to rules compliance; academic integrity; equity; and student-athlete well-being.
A designation of certified means that an institution operates its athletics program in substantial conformity with operating principles adopted by the Division I membership.
