Oklahoma State downs Bearkat women 98-60

STILLWATER, OK - Led by Andrea Riley with 26 points, the Oklahoma State women's basketball team extended its home non-conference winning streak to 42 games as the Cowgirls handed Sam Houston State a 98-60 victory at Iba Arena Monday night.
Senior guard Brittany Brooks was the only Bearkat in double figures, scoring 14 points.
Oklahoma State (12-2) never trailed, jumping out to a 15-1 lead in the first five minutes. Sam Houston (3-8) scored its first field goal at the 14:43 mark in the first half on a layup by Whitney Smith.
The Cowgirls led 46-27 at intermission and outscored the Kats 42-33 in the second period.
Tegan Cunningham scored 21 points for OSU and Lakyn Garrison added 16. Clarke Davis was Sam Houston's second-leading scorer with eight points. Ray Alexander saw her streak of six consecutive games in double figures end as she was held to seven points.
Whitney Smith's four points ran the senior forward's career scoring total to 988 points. She is 12 points away from becoming the 10th Sam Houston women's basketball player to total 1,000 or more points in her career.
Oklahoma State's defense forced 24 Sam Houston turnovers and held the Bearkats to their poorest shooting night of the season. The Kats were 19-of-65 from the field for 29.2 percent shooting. With a definite size advantage, the Cowgirls out-rebounded Sam Houston 50-41 including 27 offensive boards.
The contest was the sixth in a seven-game road swing that started Nov. 30.
"The girls have battled hard in every one of these games on a long road swing," head coach Brenda Nichols said. "We've definitely gone up against some teams that are bigger and stronger but we've fought every second."
Sam Houston opens Southland Conference action Saturday in Nacogdoches at 6 p.m. when the Kats take on Stephen F. Austin.
The Bearkat women finally return home on Tuesday, Jan. 12, when they play their final non-conference game of the season against Texas Southern.
