Sam Houston (14-16, Southland 8-7) defeated Lamar (12-14, Southland 8-7) 25-20 25-22 30-28 for their second consecutive league victory and an important win for seeding in next week's Southland tournament to be played at SHSU's Johnson Coliseum.
Kaylee Hawkins and Haley Neisler also totaled double figure kills with totals of 11 and 10, respectively. Jayme Bazile and Sierra Whitaker led Lamar with seven kills apiece.
Sam Houston's ability to win points on Lamar's serves allowed the Bearkats to roll through the Cardinals in the first set without ever falling behind. The Kats won 17 of points in which Lamar served in the set.
The Kats trailed briefly in the second frame, but quickly built a comfortable lead. Up 24-17, however, Lamar battled back to win five straight points before Kym Loving picked up the kill on Sam Houston's sixth set point.
The comeback put new spark in the Cardinals' attack as the third set became a battle. The two teams were tied seven times with two lead changes. Lamar had set points at 25-24 and 26-25 and fought off two Bearkat set points before Kolbe put away the match winner.
"Tonight and Saturday's match are two very big ones for us," SHSU head coach Brenda Gray said. "We need to build momentum for the tournament next week."
The Bearkats wrap up the regular season Saturday at 3 p.m. when Sam Houston plays host to McNeese State.
