Women meet Huskies in doubleheader opener Saturday

The contest is part of the only men's and women's basketball doubleheader at Johnson this season. The men play undefeated Cleveland State at 3:30 p.m.
With six victories in their first 10 games, the Bearkat women have posted the program's best start since 1993-94. Saturday's contest is the final non-conference home game for SHSU. The team will play three road games during the holiday break before opening Southland Conference action with UTSA at Johnson on Saturday, January 8.
Sam Houston stands 3-0 at home this season with victories over Centenary, North Texas and Grambling. The Bearkats have lost three of their last four games, with the three losses coming on the road at Texas Tech, Oklahoma and North Texas last Wednesday.
Except for a 95-45 loss against the No. 11 Sooners, the Bearkat women were in the fight until the end in each of their road losses.
"We battled down to the wire at Texas Tech, Ole Miss and last Wednesday at North Texas," head coach Brenda Nichols said. "These young ladies are leaving it all on the floor every night. We're not a finished product, but we're improving week by week. The goal is to be ready for Southland Conference play in January and we're on track."
The HBU Huskies bring a 1-7 mark into Saturday's game that includes losses to TCU, Louisville and Southland Conference member Central Arkansas.
Sophomore 6-0 forward Destini Texada leads Houston Baptist with 11.9 points per game.
Three sophomores lead Sam Houston as Britni Martin is posting 16.6 points per game while Sequeena Thomas and Chanice Smith add 15.0 and 11.8 averages, respectively.
Khamra Echols adds 5.2 points and 4.3 assists per contest as the Kats' starting point guard. Huntsville product Jaleesa Thomas averages 7.2 points to lead a Sam Houston bench that is contributing 25.2 points per game.
