The Sam Houston women's team begins a three-game holiday road schedule Sunday afternoon when the Bearkats take on TCU in Daniel-Meyer Coliseum.
With six victories in their first 11 games, the Sam Houston women's basketball team is off to its best start since 1993-94.
Three of SHSU's six victories have come at home. The other three were at neutral sites as Sam Houston has posted runner-up team finishes in both the Ole Miss Magnolia Classic and the Texas Tech World Vision Classic.
Sophomore Britni Martin leads Sam Houston with 15.9 points per game. She came within one point of the all-time single game school scoring record with 37 points in a 73-59 victory over Charleston Southern after totaling 34 points in a 73-59 win against American University.
Sophomores Sequeena Thomas and Chanice Smith also are averaging in double figures, scoring 15.1 points and 10.7 respectively. A young squad with only one senior, Sam Houston is getting 25.2 points per game from its bench.
TCU brings a 5-5 record into Sunday's action. The Horned Frogs lost to No. 7 Texas A&M 91-66 in their last outing. In their previous game, Frogs posted an impressive 81-39 victory over Southland Conference opponent UT-Arlington. Wednesday night.
TCU's Helena Sverrisdottir scored a career-high 30 points to help TCU cruise to the easy victory over the Mavericks. Sverrisdottir, a 6-1 forward from Iceland, is averaging 17.1 points and 6.7 rebounds. The Horned Frogs' top scorer, however, is 6-1 forward Emily Carter who is posting a 21.2 scoring average.
Sam Houston and TCU are meeting for the 12th time in the two program's women's basketball history. The Frogs hold a 7-4 lead in the series. The Bearkats' last victory over TCU was a 67-65 victory in Fort Worth in 1984.
The pair have meet in Fort Worth each of the past two seasons with TCU winning 89-75 two years ago and 83-65 last season.
Sam Houston faces Texas-Pan American Tuesday at 7 p.m. in Edinburg and travels to Austin to face the University of Texas on Sunday, Jan. 2.
The Bearkats will open Southland Conference play Sautrday, Jan. 8, with a 2 p.m. encounter with UTSA.
