
Women battle Islanders in Corpus Christi Saturday

The last time Sam Houston and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi met in women's basketball action on January 30, the Bearkats let a 12-point lead slip away and lost to the Islanders in overtime.
Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. the Kats get another chance at A&M-Corpus Christi as the pair meet at the American Bank Center in Corpus Christi. The game will be broadcast live on KHVL 1490 AM in Huntsville.
The Sam Houston women stand 6-15 for the year and 3-6 in Southland Conference play after a 65-63 victory over Nicholls Wednesday. The Islanders stand 15-7 for the season and are 7-2 in league play.
Top players for the Islanders are Jade Davis, a 5-9 guard who averages 14.4 points per game, and Adirenne Scott, a 6-1 forward with a 11.6 scoring mean.
Sam Houston features two seniors who have joined the 1,000 point career club this year. Brittany Brooks scored 20 points in the Nicholls victory to break the 1,000 point barrier. She stands No. 11 in all-time SHSU women's basketball scoring with 1,018 points.
Whitney Smith ranks No. 8 in Sam Houston career scoring with 1,117 points. Only once before, in 1982, have two Sam Houston women's players reached 1,000 career points in the same season. In 1982 it was Sherry Pfister and Altanette Denley hitting the magic 1,000 point mark.
Brooks leads the team in scoring this season with a 13.5 average. Smith is scoring 12.0 points and leading the Kats with 7.04rebounds per game. Fellow senior Ray Alexander adds 11.2 points per contest.
Also playing important roles for Sam Houston this season are 5-9 freshman Chanice Smith (8.2 points per game), 5-10 sophomore Khamra Echols (5.6), 6-2 sophomore Bre Agnew (5.7), 6-0 freshman Clarke Davis (4.0) and 5-11 Sequeena Thomas (3.8).
Agnew and Clarke join the three fourth-year seniors in the Bearkat starting lineup.
Davis scored 18 points including five points in overtime for Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in the 76-69 victory over the Kats in Huntsville on January 30. During the extra period, Sam Houston hit only one of its 11 shots while the Islanders had two field goals and went 9-of-10 from the line. The Islanders outscored the Kats 13-6 in the extra final minutes .
Following the contest at Corpus Christi, the Sam Houston women will return to Johnson Coliseum for home games next Wednesday against Lamar and Saturday with UT-Arlington.
