The Sam Houston State women's basketball team faces another stern test Wednesday when the Bearkats challenge 10-1 Kansas at Allen Fieldhouse in Lawrence, Kansas.
The Jayhawks rank No. 2 in NCAA Division I women's basketball with a 50.7 team field goal shooting percentage and are 9-0 on their home floor.
Junior Carolyn Davis, a 6-3 forward from Houston Bush High School, paces Kansas with 17.0 points per game. She totaled 25 points in KU's last outing, an 85-68 victory over Oral Roberts.
Kansas's only loss this year came in a road game at Alabama. Kansas has won its last three games since the 80-76 defeat.
The Jayhawks have earned post season berths in the Women's NIT each of the past four seasons, finishing as WNIT runners-up in 2009.
Three other Kansas players average in double figures including Aishah Sutherland (13.9), Angel Goodrich (11.6) and Keena Mays (11.0).
Sam Houston topped South Alabama 53-50 on Dec. 20 in the Bearkats' last outing. The victory marked the first time a Southland Conference women's squad has defeated USA in 16 tries.
The Bearkats stand 4-4 for the year with all four losses coming on the road.
Preseason All-Southland Conference performers Sequeena Thomas and Britni Martin lead the Bearkats. Thomas averages 15.8 points and 10.0 rebounds while Martin contributes 15.3 points per game.
Freshman Angela Beadle has become an important performer with 9.6 points and 7.8 rebounds per game.
Sam Houston and Kansas are meeting in women's basketball for the first time.
