Player of the Year / All-Southland
3/8/2011 11:49:00 AM | Men's Basketball
The all-conference team is voted upon by the league's head coaches and sports information directors.
Clavell is a two-year letterman from Mayaguez, Puerto Rico. Crow, a Houston Westfield product, is the only four-year letterman on the 2011 Bearkat squad.
The Sam Houston men won their third consecutive Southland Conference West Division championship this year. The Bearkats are the No. 3 seed at the State Farm Southland Conference Men's Basketball Tournament in Katy, the seventh year in a row for Sam Houston to enter the post-season event as a top three seed.
"This is a great honor for Clavell. He practices hard and he plays hard," head coach Jason Hooten said. "Josten is the definition of the term student-athlete. An outstanding player, an outstanding student and an outstanding leader, Josten has been an important part of our success the past two years."
Clavell is the third Bearkat to earn Southland Conference men's basketball "Player of the Year" honors. The first two were Donald Cole in 2003 and Joe Thompson in 2005.
Clavell scored 558 points in 29 games for an average of 19.2 points per game, which is the second highest total in the conference. His average is 19.4 points per game in conference play for the two-time conference player of the week.
The senior is the only junior college transfer to score 1,000 points or more in two years as a Bearkat. The conference's 2010 newcomer of the year has scored 1,121 points in 62 games since transferring to Sam Houston from Collin County Community College.
He has scored in double figures 55 times including 27 games with 20 or more points and four with 30 or more.
A five-time player of the week in his two seasons in Huntsville, Clavell's career scoring average of 18.1 points ranks as the third highest at Sam Houston, behind James Lister, the school's all-time scoring leader, who averaged 21.9 points in 1970-73, and Tom Sewell, who posted a 19.6 scoring average from 1952 to 1954.
Crow, a 6-4 forward, has scored 774 points in 113 career games as a Bearkat. He earned his bachelor's degree in three years and is now working on his MBA degree. He and fellow senior Lance Pevehouse both were named as 2011 CoSIDA Academic All-District performers and thus are eligible for the Academic All-America ballot this season.
Crow ranks No. 4 in steals (1.8), No. 8 in assists (3.4), No. 15 in scoring (12.8) and No. 16 in rebounds (5.4) in the Southland this year. He has scored in double figures in 17 games.
