During the fall semester, the Bearkats participated in "Career Day" at Mance Park Middle School, fall carnivals at Stewart and Sam Houston elementary schools and hold "Kat Chat" sessions with youngsters throughout the area.
The Sam Houston women also volunteered with the Hearts Veteran's Museum, helping with their annual garage sale to raise money for veterans. The team also worked with Sam Houston Army ROTC to clean up the Gibbs Ranch ROTC training area.
In the spring, the squad made presentations at Gibbs Elementary to talk about respect and the importance of reading and writing, volunteered Sam Houston Elementary with their "Spring Fling" and TAKS "pep rally and were part of the annual "Relay for Life" at Bowers Stadium.
"One of the hallmarks of the Sam Houston women's basketball program is the team's committment to making a positive impact on the Huntsville community," Bearkat head coach Brenda Nicholls said. "The girls get a tremendous kick out of working with the youngsters around the community and are serious about being role models for the kids. They talk to the youngsters about the important of respect for yourself and others and for achieving in school and building a future."
