Runners open 2011 season
9/3/2011 11:51:00 AM | Cross Country, Cross Country
The Sam Houston men finished third while the Bearkat women's squad was fifth at the Johnny Morriss Cross Country Invitational hosted by the University of Houston Friday at Buffalo Bayou Park.
The meet opened the 2011 season for both Sam Houston cross country teams.
Logan Terry, Karl Schreiber and Clint Anders finish 10th, 12th, and 15th to lead the men to a 3rd place finish. Terry posted a time of 16:19.34 while Schreiber and Anders were clocked in 16:26.05 and 16:32.94, respectively.
Other Bearkat finishers were Freddy Arellano 20th (17:08.95), Patrick Pitts 21st (17:10.54) and Patrick Krol 22nd (17:20.49).
"Having two freshmen, Logan and Karl, run as well as they did was exciting," Sam Houston distance coach Jesse Parker said. "Logan was really aggressive early and ran with the lead group. It takes a lot of courage to do that in your first collegiate race and he was able to hold his own against some very good, experienced athletes.
"Karl started a bit more conservatively and moved up throughout the race, passing a lot of runners. I could tell that the hills really affected him and that's something we are going to have to continue to work on over the next several weeks. Our fourth and fifth runners need to run better."
Alyssa Dooley and Sara Collazos were the top two Bearkat women's finishers. Dooley was 19th with a time of 12:28.50. Collazos placed 22nd with a clocking of 12:44.93.
Other Bearkat women's finishers were Victoria Gemeny 26th (13:01.02); Nicole Aponte 28th (13:08.81); Sarah Pena 30th (13:13.54) and Haleigh Ceballos 35th (13:52.03)
"I was really pleased with the way the our top three women competed," Parker said. "They went out pretty quick and they were able to move well up and down the hills. The two freshmen, Nicole Aponte and Sarah Pena, both competed well. Their learning curve has been dramatic over the previous three weeks and I expect they will move up to challenge our upperclassmen as we get further into the season.
"The split between our first and fifth runner was very good and I like our depth over what we've had in years past. We have a lot of work still ahead of us as all of them need to move up a bit and run closer to the leaders."
The University of Texas, led by individual champion Marielle Hall, took first place in the women's team competition. Lamar was the men's team champion with Yonas Tesfai of the University of Houston placing first in the individual standings.
