Martin has averaged 13.5 points per game in her three years as a Bearkat, totaling 933 points in 69 games. What made her move up to No. 13 in the all-time standings interesting was the fact that the Conroe product passed her head coach in the process.
SHSU head coach Brenda Welch-Nichols totaled 923 points in 52 games during the 1988 and 1989 seasons in Sam Houston's initial days in the Southland Conference.
Tuesday night, Nichols' Bearkat women travel to play Houston Baptist in the final non-conference game before Sam Houston State begins Southland Conference action.
Martin and junior forward Sequeena Thomas, both All-Southland Conference selections, again are leading the women and continuing their assault on the SHSU record books.
Martin is averaging 14.6 points while Thomas is scoring 14.0 per game. Thomas is the team's top rebounder with 9.1 boards per contest.
Martin is 67 points away from becoming the 12th Sam Houston women's basketball player to score 1,000 career points.
Thomas stands 11th in all-time Bearkat rebounding with 472. Khamra Echols stands No. 9 in Bearkat career assists with 269.
Sam Houston brings a 4-6 season record into the contest at Houston Baptist Tuesday night.
The Huskies stand 0-12 for the season. Houston Baptist is led by Shanic Steenholdt who is averagine 16.7 points and 10.0 rebounds a game.
Sam Houston will open its 2012 Southland Conference campaign Saturday with a road game at UTSA. The Bearkats' next home appearance is Wednesday, Jan. 11, when the women will play host to UT-Arlington at 6:30 p.m.
Last year the Bearkat women rolled up an 11-5 league record to tie with UTSA as 2011 Southland Conference West Division co-champions. The title was the Bearkats' first in 24 years of competition at the NCAA Division I level.
The SHSU women's team was the No. 4 seed in the State Farm Southland Conference Tournament in Katy, the program's highest seed since 2000 when the Kats also were seeded fourth.
