
Southland Conference Championships Friday

Both the Sam Houston men's and women's cross country teams will participate in the annual Southland Conference Championship races Friday in Lake Charles, La., at Ward Three Rec Complex.
The women's 6-kilometer race will begin at 8:30 a.m., followed by the men's 8-kilometer race at 9:30 a.m.
The Bearkat women equaled their highest Southland finish in 26 years in last year's meet in Beaumont, finishing as runner-up two points behind Stephen F. Austin. Three SHSU women earned all-Southland honors as Alyssa Dooley finished as runner-up, Soleen Riou was seventh and Ana Moreno was eighth.
The Sam Houston men finished sixth in 2012, the Bearkats' best performance since 2008.
McNeese State is the defending men's conference champion. The Stephen F. Austin women hope to claim their second consecutive title and their third in the last four years.
Lamar leads the men's teams with 11 cross country championships followed by McNeese State with eight, winning its last title in 2012. Original conference member Abilene Christian won the league's first seven championships from 1964-70. Lamar holds the conference record for most consecutive titles with six.
Stephen F. Austin leads the women's teams with seven championships followed by A&M-Corpus Christi with four and Lamar with three titles.
