The University of Texas ran the Longhorns' all-time women's basketball record against Sam Houston to 8-0 with a 109-48 victory over the Bearkats Sunday afternoon at the Erwin Center in Austin.
Nineka Enemkpali led the Horns with 18 points as Texas upped its season record to 7-3. Freshman Taylor Dorsey led the Bearkats with 14 points. Sam Houston now stands 5-5 for the year.
The Horns used their size advantage to limit the Bearkats to 31 percent shooting as Sam Houston went 17-of-56 from the field. Texas hit 44-of-71 from the field (62 percent).
“Having the opportunity to play a bigger team like Texas is really going to help us as we get ready to go into Southland play in January,” SHSU head coach Brenda Nichols said. “I was impressed with the way our kids kept fighting and hustling.”
Dorsey gave the Bearkats their only lead of the game nailing a three-pointer from the right corner just seven seconds into the contest. Texas quickly took control with seven unanswered points.
Sam Houston hit three of their first five shots after Angela Beadle scored on a short jumper and Dorsey added another trey to cut the Longhorn lead to four, 11-7 with 16:25 to play in the half.
The Bearkats went cold, however, missing eight shots in a row as Texas went on a 10-0 run to go in front 21-7 with 11:29 in the first period. Sam Houston never cut the margin to less than 10 points as the Horns built a 50-25 lead at halftime.
The Longhorns went into the locker room at intermission shooting 63 percent (22-of-35) from the field while the Bearkats were held to 32 percent shooting (9-of-28).
Texas kept its foot on the pedal in the second half, starting the period with a 23-8 run and eventually out-scoring the Kats 59-23 in the last 20 minutes.
Sam Houston travels to TCU Friday for a 5 p.m. contest against the Horned Frogs. The Bearkats begin Southland Conference action Thursday, Jan. 2, at Northwestern State.
The Bearkat women's next home appearance at Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum will be Thursday, Jan. 9 against McNeese State at 5:30 p.m.
