The Bearkat women, who have never won a Southland title in their 26 years in the league, stand in first place with a two-game lead over the four teams tied for second place.
When the Kats take the floor against A&M-Corpus Christi on the road Friday night, the Sam Houston women can produce their best record have at the Southland season midway point.
Led by high scoring seniors Britni Martin, Sequeena Thomas and Chanice Smith, Sam Houston stands 7-1 in Southland action. Central Arkansas, Lamar, McNeese State and Oral Roberts all are tied for second with identical 6-3 marks.
Friday's opponent, A&M-Corpus Christi, still is looking for its first Southland win. The Islanders are 0-8 in league action and stand 1-18 for the year.
The Bearkats' lone loss came at the hands of McNeese State. The women have run off four consecutive wins since that road defeat.
Martin and Thomas rank fifth and ninth, respectively, in Southland scoring. Martin is averaging 17.4 points per game while Thomas is scoring 13.8 per contest. Thomas also stands as the league's top rebounder with 12.7 boards per game.
Martin stands as Sam Houston's No. 2 all-time leading scorer with 1,658 points. She also is the program's career leader in three point baskets (287) and ranks No. 2 in career assists (392).
Thomas became the first Sam Houston player ever to total both 1,000 career points and rebounds last week. She has totaled 1,230 points and 1,012 boards in her four years as a Bearkat.
Smith continues to move up the career scoring ladder as well. The senior guard is eight points away from becoming the 14th Bearkat woman to score 1,000 points.
Martin, Thomas and Smith have a strong supporting cast as well. Jazmin Wiley, Angela Beadle and Jasmine Johnson continue to see extensive playing time.
Following the matchup Friday with A&M-Corpus Christi, Sam Houston State returns to Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum next Thursday and Saturday to face McNeese State and Lamar, respectively, in a pair of critical games.
