
MVPs announced at Night of Champions Celebration

The inaugural “Night of Champions” celebration for Sam Houston State University intercollegiate athletics Sunday evening at the James and Nancy Gaertner Performing Arts Center was a smashing success.
“Night of Champions” featured an awards show format similar in style to the EPSYs or Grammys
An audience of more than 600 watched as the Bearkats celebrated Southland Conference championships in baseball, football, volleyball and women's basketball.
The winners of the “Most Valuable Athlete” for 14 sports teams from the 2012-13 season plus three winners from spring 2012 were announced during the event.
Fall sports MVPs were Kylie Hambleton (soccer), Alyssa Dooley (women's cross country), Karl Schreiber (men's cross country), Tayler Gray and Deveney Wells-Gibson (volleyball) and Timothy Flanders (football).
Winter sports MVPs included Lygia Foreman (women's indoor track), Charles White (men's indoor track), women's basketball (Britni Martin and Sequeena Thomas) and men's basketball (Darius Gatson).
Spring sports Most Valuable Players ware Kimi Davidson (bowling), Sheridan Currie (tennis), Shelby Hardy (women's golf), Albert Miner (men's golf) and Tori Benavidez (softball).
Anthony Azar, Jenny Zoch and D. J. Hayes were recognized as MVPs for the 2012 spring seasons in baseball and women's and men's outdoor track and field.
Donna Brinegar and Alex Padron received the most valuable trainer and manager awards, respectively.
Greg Olson (baseball) and Jenny Zoch (women's track) were recognized as the recipients of the Fred Gibson Academic Achievement Award.
Sam Houston's 79 senior student-athletes, the Bearkats' All-Southland first and second team honorees and All-America selections also were spotlighted.
