
13 Bearkat men earn All-Southland Honors

Thirteen members of Sam Houston's men's squad that finished as runner-up at the 2013 Southland Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Lake Charles, La., last weekend earned all-league honors this spring by finishing either first, second or third in an event.
Three Bearkats earned all-league honors as Southland individual champions.
Senior Karique Stephen from Baytown won the Southland men's triple jump with a mark of 51 feet, nine inches. Freshman De'Quad Binder from Georgetown was the league champion in the triple jump (51 feet, nine inches). Senior Matthew Johnson of Port Neches Groves won the decathlon with 7,496 points.
Nine Bearkat athletes received All-Southland honors after runner-up performances at the meet.
Freshman Tre'vian White of Lancaster, junior Kristen Mitchell from Houston, senior Jarrick Wright of Houston Eisenhower and freshman Leroy Harris of Houston Yates comprised Sam Houston's 4x100 relay team that finished second with a 41.19 clocking.
Freshman Andrew Waller of Liberty Hill, junior Matthew Viverette of Barbers Hill, Binder and sophomore Rodney Jones of DeSoto powered the Kats to a 3:14.75 mark in the 4x400 relay.
Viverette also was runner-up in the 110 meter hurdles (14.31) and junior Charles White of Las Vegas, Nevada, placed second in the triple jump (51' 3.75”).
Trevor Sealy, a junior from Pearland, threw the hammer 196 feet, 11 inches.
Four Bearkats were third place finishers in individual events.
Rodney Jones ran a 47.67 in the 400 meters, Johnson produced a 14.35 clocking in the 110 hurdles, Viverette posted a 52.89 in the 400 meter hurdles and Clint Anders went 3:52.30 in the 1500 meter run. Anders is a senior from Welmar.
