Cross country begins action at SFA Friday

The Sam Houston men's and women's cross country teams open their 2013 schedules Friday at a meet hosted by Stephen F. Austin whose women's team is the defending Southland league champion.
Defending champions McNeeseState and Stephen F. Austin open the 2013 Southland Conference cross country season and will be among nine league schools in action Friday.
Sam Houston's women were the runner-ups to the Jacks. The SFA women have won two of the last three conference titles and return four runners.
The Bearkats return five runners from last year's team that finished only two points behind SFA.
Senior Alyssa Dooley and sophomores Solenn Riou and Ana Moreno all earned All-Southland honors last year after placing second, seventh and eighth respectively. Dooley's runner-up finish was the highest by a Bearkat woman in more than a decade.
Other returning runners include Haleight Ceballos and Nicole Aponte
The Bearkat men finished sixth in last year's Southland event.
The men have a strong junior and senior class with Patrick Pitts, Juan Ponce, Ryan Saam, Karl Schreiber and Logan Terry all back.
Following the SFA triple dual, Sam Houston will compete at the Rice Invitational Sept. 13
The 2013 Southland Cross Country Championships are set for Friday, Nov. 1, at Ward 3 Recreation Complex in Lake Charles, La.
