Three days after earning their first victory of the season, the Sam Houston women's basketball team faces a tough test Saturday afternoon as they take on Louisiana-Lafayette at the University Center in Lafayette at 2 p.m.
The Rain' Cajuns are undefeated (4-0) this season with victories over Southland Conference foes Lamar and Southeastern Louisiana and in-state opponents Xavier and Louisiana Tech. The win marked the ULL women's first win ever over La. Tech.
Sam Houston bested Texas Southern 61-54 Wednesday night at home despite playing short-handed with several top players sidelined with injuries.
Transfer guard Shernise Robertson leads the Bearkats in scoring with 16.0 points per game. Sophomore guard Taylor Dorsey also is averaging in double figures with 10.7 points per contest.
The Ragin' Cajuns also feature outstanding perimeter play. Sophomore guard Jaylyn Gordon is leading the team with 17.1 points per game. She totaled 23 points in ULL's victory over Southeastern Louisiana last Saturday.
Keke Veal and Kia Wilridge also average in double figures with scoring means of 13.5 and 13.0, respectively. Wilridge led the Cajuns in their historic victory over La Tech with 18 points.
Sam Houston defeated Louisiana-Lafayette 83-73 in Huntsville last year in a game that, with 56 fouls between the two teams, became a free throw shooting contest at the end.
The Bearkat women also are getting scoring production from guard Amanda Barnes (8.2 points per game) and forwards Saundra Guillory (4.5) and Shadijah Moore (4.5).
After Saturday's game at Lafayette the women will break for final exams. Next action for Sam Houston will be a home game Wednesday, December 17, when the Kats play host to Prairie View A&M at 6:30 p.m. at Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum.
