Kats Take Aim At Cardinals Saturday

At the halfway point of Southland Conference women's basketball play, there is still no clear frontrunner in women's basketball as the top 10 schools are separated by only three games.
With all those teams bunched together, Sam Houston's 1:30 p.m. women's game with Lamar is a critical clash for both programs.
Lamar stands in second place in the women's race with a 7-3 mark, one game behind league leader Central Arkansas (8-2).
Sam Houston is tied for eighth at 5-5. The Bearkat women have home games coming up next week against Northwestern State (5-5) and Stephen F. Austin (6-4).
With only five more weeks left in regular season league play, all eight spots at the post-season tournament in Katy are up for grabs, including the coveted top seeds, which advance teams automatically to the semifinals.
The Bearkats are 10-11 overall following a weekend split at home with a win against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi followed by a loss to Houston Baptist.
Angela Beadle and Jasmine Johnson continue to lead the Kats. Beadle is averaging 15.9 points and 10.1 rebounds. Johnson is adding 11.9 points and 4.2 assists per contest.
Lamar 12-9 overall. The Cardinals' 5-7 guard Gia Ayers set school records for free throws made (16) and attempted (22) in last week's win over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
Ayers is averaging 15.0 points per game. Dominque Edwards (15.9 points), JaMeisha Edwards (12.2) and Shauna Long (10.7) also are scoring in double figures for a Cardinal offense that is averaging 70.6 points per contest.
