The Sam Houston women's basketball team opens its first Southland Conference road swing Thursday night when the Kats take on Southeastern Louisiana in Hammond.
Tip-off is at 7 p.m. at the University Center on campus at Southeastern Louisiana.
Southeastern Louisiana owns a 4-8 season record but is 0-1 after a road loss to Stephen F. Austin Monday night. Sam Houston stands 1-1 in league action and is 2-10 for the year.
Sam Houston opened conference play with a 59-55 victory over Incarnate Word Saturday afternoon before falling to Northwestern State, 66-57, Monday evening.
Junior guard Shernise Robertson (15.3 ppg) and sophomore guard Taylor Dorsey (11.4 ppg) are the top scorers for the Bearkats. Junior post Shadijah Moore leads the team with 6.4 rebounds per contest, while Dorsey is tops on the squard with 2.8 assists per outing.
Southeastern Louisiana's 78-71 overtime decision at SFA Monday marked the Lions' third straight game that went extra time.
The Lions opened league play on Monday, dropping a 78-71 overtime decision to Stephen F. Austin. The contest marked the third straight for SLU that required overtime.
In the loss, junior guard Peaches Anderson led Southeastern with a career-high 18 points, while junior forward Nanna Pool added 15 points and eight rebounds. Southeastern averages 62.2 points per game. Senior guard Symone Miller leads the team with 13.7 points per game followed by Pool (13.1 ppg).
Southeastern holds a 20-15 advantage over the Bearkats in the all-time series between the two women's programs. The Lions were swept by the SHSU women last season, including an 86-85 overtime loss in Hammond.
Playing short-handed due to injuries to top returning players, Sam Houston has been playing several newcomers in key positions. The Kat women have not put their complete lineup on the floor for any game this winter. Seven current players have missed at least one game with injuries. Senior forward Jasmine Robinson saw her first action of the season Monday against Northwestern State.
“We're beginning to get some of our players back,” SHSU head coach Brenda Nichols said. “We're seeing improvement each game. We just have to keep playing hard.”
The game between the Lions and the Bearkats will be broadcast live on the internet at www.LionSports.net .
The Sam Houston women will continue their first road trip Saturday in a men's and women's doubleheader at the University of New Orleans. The Bearkats play at Nicholls in Thibodaux, La., on Thursday, January 15, then return to Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum in Huntsville for a home game Saturday, January 17, with McNeese State.
