After picking up their first victory of the 2015-16 season Friday afternoon, the Sam Houston women's basketball team plays host to LSU-Alexandria Monday at 6:30 p.m. at Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum.
The Bearkats defeated Our Lady of the Lake Friday 67-56 before a crowd of 2,452 Huntsville area elementary school kids. Sam Houston opened the year on the road with losses at TCU 85-59 and Arkansas 67-47.
Two seniors who have earned All-Southland Conference honors as Bearkats lead the women's team in scoring this year. Guard Shernise Robertson is averaging 16.7 points while center Angela Beadle is adding 11.3 points per game. Beadle also is the team's top rebounder with a 7.0 average.
Two newcomers, Laurynn McGowen and Kamry Orr, are the Kats' third and fourth-leading scorers with individual averages of 8.0 and 7.7 points per game.
LSU-Alexandria is looking for its first victory of the year after seven games. The Generals have played four Southland Conference opponents, falling 99-55 to McNeese State, 96-59 to Incarnate Word, 93-75 to New Orleans and 94-65 to Northwestern State.
Bearkat head coach Brenda Welch-Nichols was excited about the play of her young team in their first home game last Friday.
“We had good team play and everyone contributed,” Nichols said. “I like the way the team is meshing together. In these early games we're looking to find our grove.”
Following Monday's contest, the Sam Houston women will head to the northeast to participate in the LIU-Brooklyn Invitational in New York.
