Women face league champion SFA Saturday

Needing a victory to earn a berth in the Southland Tournament in Katy next week as the eighth seed, Sam Houston's women's basketball team challenges Stephen F. Austin in Nacogdoches Saturday at 4 p.m.
The Lumberjack women clinched 2015 Southland Conference title out-right Thursday with a 56-45 win over Northwestern State. The victory was Stephen F. Austin's 10th straight.
The last team to defeat the Lumberjacks was Sam Houston State. On January 24 in Huntsville, the Bearkats fought back from a nine-point deficit to upset the Jacks 65-64.
Down seven at half, 30-23, the Bearkat women outscored SFA 42-34 in the second period to earn the victory. Junior guard Shernise Robertson led the Kats with 21 points including two big free throws with 12 seconds left for the game-winning points.
SFA comes into the final regular season game with a 15-2 league mark and a 22-6 overall record. The Bearkats are tied for eighth place with Houston Baptist and New Orleans. All three are 5-12. The Kats, who have lost eight of their last nine since defeating SFA, stand 6-21 for the year.
The game features the league's two top scorers. Robertson, a transfer from Tyler Junior College, is the Southland's top scorer with 19.5 points per game. Porsha Roberts of SFA is second in the league with 17.3 points per contest. She is the Southland's top rebounder with 9.5 boards per outing.
Taylor Dorsey adds 12.7 points a game to the Bearkats' offense while Taylor Ross is SFA's second-leading scorer with a 14.1 average.
The contest will be televised by ESPN3.
