With championships in football and golf and runner-up finishes in men's basketball, indoor track and field and outdoor track and field, Sam Houston earned its fourth Southland Conference Men's All-Sports Championship Cup during the 2014-15 playing season.
The Bearkats totaled 78.5 points in the men's standings. Lamar and Stephen F. Austin were second and third with 75 and 72 totals, respectively. Sam Houston previously won the men's all-sports title in 1999-2000, 2006-07 and 2013-14.
Sam Houston Director of Athletics Bobby Williams will be presented the Southland Conference Men's All-Sports Trophy Tuesday night at the annual Southland Conference Honors Dinner at the Westin Stonebriar Resort in Frisco, Texas.
Williams has brought home hardware from each of the last three Honors Dinners including the Commissioners' Cup in 2013 and 2014, the men's all-sports trophy in 2015 and the women's all-sports trophy in 2013.
“Winning Southland Conference All-Sports titles is important because each of our sports programs contributes to a Cup victory,” Sam Houston athletic director Bobby Williams said. “If every sport is important, then every student-athlete, coach, manager, trainer and administrative staff member is important. The pursuit of these Cup titles is something that has brought this department together as an athletic program.”
Sam Houston stands as the only Southland team to earn five Commissioner's Cups. The Bearkats are one of only two current league member to earn four Men's All-Sports Cups. From 2005 to 2007, the Bearkats won three consecutive Commissioner's Cup titles, also an unprecedented feat Southland history.
Since the 2000 season, Sam Houston has won 32 Southland Conference championships (regular season or post-season tournament) and made 28 NCAA Division I post-season appearances.
The Commissioner's Cup is awarded annually to the top overall athletics program in the Southland. Sam Houston State has won the Cup a record five times. In the 18-year history of the Commissioner's Cup, Stephen F. Austin has three and Northwestern State has one.
The Southland Conference all-sports trophies are awarded annually for men's and women's competition based on a 13-point system for all conference sports. Point values are 13, 12, 11, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2 and 1, pending place of finish. Regular-season standings are used for sports that have a conference tournament. The Commissioner's Cup is awarded to the university compiling the highest combined total of men's and women's all-sports points.
