
Squads take 2nd, 3rd at HBU Opener

The Sam Houston State women's cross country team captured second led by senior Nicole Aponte's 12-minute runner-up finish in the two-mile while freshman Jeffrey Moore secured second at 15:50.68 in the three-mile and the men took third to highlight the Houston Baptist Cross Country Opener from McGregor Park Thursday evening.
Sophomore Cassidy Allen took sixth at 12:29 in the two-mile while junior Miranda Prado finished 12th (13:06), freshman Meaghen Seales claimed 15th (13:06) and sophomore Briana McCall went 16th (13:32) out of 20 competitors.
Aponte finished just four-tenths of a second behind Houston sophomore Maddie Brown who secured the top spot. The women posted 44 points, trailing Houston's 23 and besting Houston Baptist's 58.
The men claimed third in the three-mile as junior Robert Monticone finished 11th (16:29.59), junior John Bounds took 12th (16:35.69), freshman Joe Sosa finished 23rd (17:24.79) and freshman Jake Alexander took 26th (17:33.68) out of 29 athletes.
Carlos Arias took the top spot in the race with a time of 15:44.51. The Bearkats finished third with 59 points, trailing Houston Baptist's 51 and Houston's 28. Texas Southern finished fourth of the area schools with 87 points.
