LIONS COME TO HUNTSVILLE AFTER UPSET WIN
Southeastern Louisiana, predicted to finish 12th in a 13-team race in the 2016 Southland Conference women's head coaches preseason poll, comes to Huntsville Thursday night after raising eyebrows in the league Monday night with a 65-56 victory over Stephen F. Austin.
The Lumberjacks were picked No. 3 in the coaches' preseason voting. The victory snapped a 10-game losing streak in conference play for the Lions. Southeastern Louisiana came into their Southland opener 1-10 while SFA stood 7-5.
Southeastern now stands as one of four women's teams unbeaten in conference action in 2016. Northwestern State is 2-0 while Abilene Christian and Nicholls join the Lions with 1-0 marks.
BEARKATS 1-1 IN LEAGUE PLAY
Sam Houston stands 1-1 in Southland action. The Bearkats opened league play with a 65-60 victory at Incarnate Word Saturday then fell to Northwestern State 69-49 in Natchitoches, La., Monday night. Shernise Robertson scored a season high 24 points in the win over the Cardinals in San Antonio. Angela Beadle and Laurynn McGowen led the Kats with 10 points each in the loss in Louisiana Monday.
BEARKATS VS. LIONS WOMEN'S SERIES
Sam Houston and Southeastern Louisiana meet for the 38th time in women's basketball Thursday night. The Lions lead the all-time series with 22 victories to 15 for the Bearkats. Southeastern Louisiana ended a six-game Kat winning streak in the series last season with a 78-76 victory in Hammond.
SAM HOUSTON IN NON-CONFERENCE PLAY
The Bearkat women posted a 4-6 record in the non-conference portion of their 2015-16 schedule. The victory total included a pair of road victories with the Kats defeating LIU-Brooklyn 63-56 in New York and Texas Southern 53-51 in Houston. Sam Houston posted home victories over Our Lady of the Lake and LSU-Alexandria.
SOUTHEASTERN LOUISIANA IN NON-CONFERENCE PLAY
The Lions' only non-conference win was a 62-57 victory at Florida A&M. Southeastern Louisiana faced a demanding schedule which saw the Lions take on Arkansas, Auburn, Georgia Tech, Texas Tech and Wright State.
SCOUTING SOUTHEASTERN LOUISANA
Senior guard KaeLynn Boyd has led the Lions in scoring in three of her four games since joining the team after sitting out the first semester following a transfer from Texas-Pan American. The 5-5 guard, who scored 19 points in the victory over SFA, is averaging 14.9 points per game. She is 7-of-18 from beyond the three-point arc.
Sophomore 5-7 guard Taylin Underwood, who scored 18 points versus SFA, is averaging 15.1 points per game. Nanna Pool, a 6-1 senior center, leads the Lions' inside game with 13.3 points and 7.8 rebounds.
TWO SENIORS LEAD BEARKATS
Seniors Shernise Robertson and Angela Beadle led the Bearkat women. Robertson led the Southland Conference in scoring and was a first-team all-league selection last year. This season the 5-6 guard stands second in the league in scoring with 16.1 points per game. She has scored in double figures in 10 contests this year and 34 games during her career.
Beadle earned all-Southland honors as a sophomore in 2014 but missed last season with an injury. The 6-3 senior ranks third in Southland rebounding (8.0) and 10th in league scoring (11.9).
ANGELA BEADLE MOVING UP
Senior center Angela Beadle has become the 16th Sam Houston women's basketball player to score 1,000 career points. With 18 points Saturday at UIW and 10 at Northwestern State Monday, her career mark stands at 1,012 points. The 2014 All-Southland Conference selection stands fourth in Bearkat women's career rebounding with a total of 780 boards and third in SHSU career blocked shots with 141.
THREE RETURNING LETTERWINNERS ALSO START
Senior Sadijah Moore and Amanda Barnes and junior Morghan Day complete the Sam Houston starting lineup. Two freshman and a junior college transfer are the first players off the bench. Freshmen Laurynn McGowen and Kamry Orr are averaging 8.3 and 5.4 points, respectively. Transfer Jasmine McCants helps the Kats' inside game.
NEXT UP FOR THE BEARKATS
Thursday's duel with Southeastern Louisiana is the first of three consecutive home games for the Bearkat women. Sam Houston will play host to New Orleans at 2 p.m. Saturday in the first contest of a men's and women's Southland doubleheader.
