FRISCO, Texas – Sam Houston State quarterback Jeremiah Briscoe has been named the Southland Conference offensive player of the week in an announcement from league officials on Monday. Additionally, he has also been named the CFPA and Stats FCS national player of the week.
Briscoe set a school record with seven touchdown passes on Saturday in leading the No. 2 ranked Bearkats to a convincing 63-28 win over Stephen F. Austin in the Battle of the Piney Woods at NRG Stadium in Houston.
The Bearkat signal caller completed 25 of 33 pass attempts without an interception in the victory, throwing for 438 yards in becoming just the 10th 400-yard passer in Sam Houston State history. It was also the first time a Kat had thrown for 400 yards in a game since Blake Joseph in 2009.
He threw for five scores in the opening half and put up his totals in just three quarters of action. Briscoe will enter the fifth week of the season ranked first in the Southland Conference and second in the nation in passing yards per game (368.3) after Saturday's performance.
Briscoe is the second Bearkat to earn a weekly award from the conference this season and the first on the offensive side, following P.J. Hall's defensive player of the week honor on Sept. 19.
Following its win over SFA, the Bearkats will look to go to 5-0 on the season on Saturday when they travel to San Antonio to take on Incarnate Word.
