HUNTSVILLE, Texas – Sam Houston State women's basketball takes on UTRGV on Monday night, looking to rebound after a back-and-forth battle in a loss to Wiley College on Friday. Tipoff is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. with Bearkat Sports Network streaming the game.
Sam Houston (0-3) will face the Paqueros twice in the next six days, beginning with Monday's non-conference tilt. The Bearkats, who have fallen to Arkansas, TCU and Wiley to begin the 2016-17 season, are in search of their first victory.
Despite the results, Sam Houston's new-look roster has seen several positives including on the boards. The Kats have outrebounded opponents 138-108 on the season. Sam Houston outrebounded Arkansas 38-35; TCU 50-37 and Wiley College 50-36.
In the squad's last outing against Wiley, Lydia Baxter earned a career-best nine rebounds and Angela Delaney notched a career-record 10 points. Kiera McKinney, a freshman from Amarillo, recorded a Sam Houston season-best 15 points and Tia Harston dished out five assists.
Sam Houston senior Jasmine McCants ranks fourth in the Southland in rebounds per game (9.0) and is 23rd in points per game (9.5). Rachel Harrell is sixth in three-pointers per game (2.0) and 10th in three-point percentage (.333). McKinney is tied for third in the Southland for blocked shots (3).
SAM HOUSTON, UTRGV GET ACCLIMATED
Sam Houston and UTRGV meet for the 10th time on Monday and the first time since the Vaqueros changed their name from UT-Pan American. The Bearkats own an 8-2 record including six of the last seven. Monday's meeting will be the first between the two squads since the Bearkats bested then Texas-Pan American 64-56 on Dec. 1, 2011.
While no current player has ever faced off against UTRGV, head coach Brenda Welch-Nichols did so three times during her SHSU playing career. In fact, against UTRGV in 1987, Nichols went 12 for 12 at the free throw line, the second-best individual single-game performance at the charity stripe in Sam Houston lore.
