SAN MARCOS, Texas – Sam Houston State reunites with a former Southland Conference rival, visiting Texas State on Monday in the first game between the pair since the 2012 league tournament.
Sam Houston owns a 41-38 advantage in the series which began in 1970. The Bearkats have won seven of the last nine in the series but dropped the last meeting between the two squads, 74-66, in the first round of the Southland Tournament on March 6, 2012.
The Bearkats (0-9) enter Monday seeking their first win in what has been a non-conference slate chalked with challenging road matchups. Sam Houston has played just twice at Johnson Coliseum and is in the midst of a season-high eight-game road trip.
FRESHMAN FIREPOWER
Sam Houston has played five true freshmen this season who have combined to contribute 17 starts and 39 games played for a total of 767 minutes. The quintet has accounted for 195 of the Bearkats' 429 points this year (45 percent).

Sam Houston true freshmen have contributed more 3-pointers (31) than any other team's first-year freshmen in the Southland while ranking second in minutes played (767), points (195) and rebounds (111) behind Abilene Christian.
SCOUTING THE BOBCATS
Texas State is 3-6 on the season and has averaged 52.9 points per game while forcing 19.2 turnovers per contest. The Bobcats are looking to snap a four-game losing streak after posting a 3-2 record in November, highlighted by a 61-56 victory at Houston on Nov. 23.
In its last game, the Bobcats fell 64-60 to Prairie View A&M, squandering a 19-point lead as the Panthers outscored Texas State 58-35 over the final 30 minutes. The Bobcats are 2-0 this season against Southland opponents, defeating Incarnate Word 67-50 and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 57-50.
A LOOK AHEAD
Monday's game will be the final non-conference contest of the 2016-17 season and last game in 2016. The Bearkats begin Southland Conference play on Jan. 2 with a visit to Houston Baptist. Three days later, the squad heads to Lake Charles to take on McNeese before returning to Johnson Coliseum for the first time since Nov. 21 for a Jan. 7 tilt against Nicholls.
