After a grueling five-game road swing, the Sam Houston women play five of their last six regular season games at home in Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum.
The Kats will host Houston Baptist Saturday at 2 p.m.
The Huskies defeated the Bearkats 67-63 at HBU's Sharp Gymnasium two weeks ago. Shernise Robertson scored 28 points in the loss, going 6-of-11 from beyond the arc. Anna Strickland led Houston Baptist with 17 points.
The Sam Houston women will be looking to bounce back from a 67-55 loss at Abilene Christian Wednesday night. Angela Beadle was top scorer for the Bearkats with 17 points and nine rebounds. The Wildcats led by as many as 17 points in the third period but the Kats cut the final margin to 12 in the fourth period.
Saturday's contest holds important post-season implications for both teams. The top eight finishers in the regular season statistics (except for Abilene Christian and Incarnate Word) earn berths in the annual Southland tournament in Katy in March. Currently HBU stands sixth among the eligible teams with a 6-6 league mark while the Bearkats are one-half game out of eighth with a 4-8 conference record.
The Sam Houston women play four of the contenders for playoff berths at home in the next four weeks.
Beadle and her fellow senior Shernise Robertson continue to lead the team in scoring. Robertson is the league's top scorer with a 19.0 average including 19 double figure performances this winter. Beadle is the team's second leading scorer with a 14.5 average and is one of the league's top rebounders with 9.9 boards per game.
Two freshman guards, Laurynn McGowen and Kamry Orr are adding 7.4 and 7.1 points per contest. Orr scored 15 points Wednesday in Abilene and has posted double figure scoring performances six times this year.
Beadle now ranks No. 8 in Sam Houston women's career scoring (1,190 points). She needs 35 points to pass Whitney Smith (1,224 in 2007-10). Robertson has climbed to No. 16 in Sam Houston all-time scoring with 939 points.
KHVL 104.9 FM will broadcast Saturday's game live in the Walker County area.
