Led by guard Shernise Robertson and center Angela Beadle, the 2015-16 Sam Houston women's basketball team left their mark on the Bearkat record book.
Coming to Sam Houston as a transfer from Tyler Junior College two years ago, Robertson became the fastest Bearkat woman to score 1,000 career points. The Cypress Falls High School product completed her career with 1,097 points. Each of the other 15 women that have totaled more than 1,000 career points did so in three seasons.
With 531 points as a junior in 2015 and 566 this season, Robertson has become only the fifth player in league annals to lead the Southland Conference in scoring in consecutive seasons. The guard earned All-Southland Conference honors both years.
Her 566 points this year is the second-highest individual season scoring total in Sam Houston history. Only Hall-of-Honor member Sherry Pfister scored more with her 663 points in 1979-80. Beadle, a senior from Austin Crockett High School, totaled 514 points this year, the seventh highest figure by a Bearkat.
Beadle set a school record for field goal accuracy this year, hitting 202 of her 366 shots for a .552 mark. The former school mark was .544 by Sandra Boyd in 1987-88.
Other single season marks for Robertson this year included 128 free throw makes (No. 5 all-time) and 77 three-point field goals (No. 4 in the single season records). Beadle's numbers included 63 blocks (No. 2 in the single season records), 202 field goals (No. 3) and 341 rebounds (No. 6).
The entire Sam Houston team combined for a season free throw team percentage of .723 (474 of 656), breaking the old school record of .716 set in 2012-13.
Robertson's career total of 1,097 points came in 59 games the past two years, giving her a career scoring average of 18.6, the tops in Sam Houston women's basketball annals. Standing in second and third place all-time are Pfister with a 17.9 average in 105 games from 1980 to 1983 and Sam Houston head coach Brenda Welch-Nichols who posted a 17.8 average with 923 points in 52 games.
Robertson also set a Bearkat women's career record for free throw accuracy. The senior has been successful on 310 of her 373 shots from the charity line for a .831 mark. The former record was a .797 percentage by Britni Martin. Robertson stands No. 2 all-time in three-point accuracy with a .372 percentage.
Beadle ended her career ranked No. 2 all-time in field goal accuracy with a .499 percentage. She also stands as the program's all-time leader in block shots (184) and second in career rebounds with 1,025.
Led by Beadle and Robertson who both earned All-Tournament honors at the Southland event in Katy last weekend, Sam Houston became only the second team in tournament history seeded lower than fourth to get to the finals.
