The Sam Houston women's basketball team plays host to Lamar at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday with both teams eager for a victory as they attempt to nail down a berth in the Southland Conference Tournament in Katy next week.
Eight teams make the tournament. Two squads, Southland Conference leader Abilene Christian and last place Incarnate Word are not yet eligible for the tournament in Katy at the Merrell Center March 10-13 as they are in their final season of the move up to NCAA Division I status.
Nine teams currently are in the race for the eight spots with Houston Baptist (7-9), Nicholls (7-9), Lamar (7-10), Sam Houston (6-10) and A&M-Corpus Christi (6-10) fighting not to be the odd team out.
Sam Houston defeated Lamar 78-76 in Beaumont on January 27 so a victory Thursday would give the Kats the tiebreaker over the Cardinals.
The Bearkats picked up a much-needed win over A&M-Corpus Christi 75-57 in their last outing this past Saturday. Senior guard Shernise Robertson led Sam Houston with 25 points to become the 16th Bearkat woman to score more than 1,000 points in her career.
Robertson stands as the first Bearkat woman to score more than 1,000 in just two seasons with her total of 1,007 points. She is the league's top scorer for the second year in a row, averaging 18.3 points per game.
Angela Beadle, who now ranks No. 7 in all-time Sam Houston scoring with 1,254 yards and No. 3 in Kat career rebounds (946), is getting close to another step up the career ladder. Beadle needs 17 points to pass Sirena Autman in career scoring and 17 rebounds to pass Altanette Denley in career rebounding.
Autman scored 1,270 points from 1988 to 1991 while Denley pulled down 962 rebounds from 1980 to 1982.
Kamry Orr adds 8.4 points per game for the Bearkats while Laurynn McGowen is posting a 7.5 scoring average per contest.
Lamar brings an 11-17 season mark into Wednesday's contest. The Cardinals also are led by a high-scoring guard in 5-2 Addesha Collins who averages 15.2 points per game.
The Cardinals will be wrapping up their 2016 regular season campaign Wednesday night. Sam Houston plays host to Stephen F. Austin Saturday at 4:35 p.m. at Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum in the Bearkats final game on the home schedule.
