Installation of the new AstroTurf 3D3-60 turf system at Elliott T. Bowers Stadium is almost complete.
Work on the new surface has been underway for the last week. The new surface replaces the current AstroTurf field that was installed in June, 2007. Cost of the installation will be $525,000.
The project is the latest in a series of upgrades to Sam Houston State University's intercollegiate athletics.
In the past year, new state-of-the art video/scoreboards have been added at the venues for football, track and field, volleyball, basketball and softball; a new AstroTurf field has been installed at Don Sanders Stadium for baseball and renovations for Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum have begun.
“The video/scoreboards, the new field at Don Sanders Stadium and the renovation of Johnson Coliseum represent the first in a series of on-going enhancements to the fan experience at all Bearkat athletic venues,” Sam Houston director of athletics Bobby Williams. “Anyone who attended events at those venues this year experienced the impact of the improvements.”
The new turf will feature inlaid letters “Sam Houston” and “Bearkats in the end zones and inlaid Southland Conference logos and Sam Houston paw print logos on the field as well as colored end zones and field border.
“Just as the video/scoreboards added new dimensions of entertainment at Bearkat football this year, the new turf will bring extra excitement and energy to Bowers Stadium,” Williams said. “We were able to renovate the track a year ago. Now we are adding new turf at the football field. Each of these new additions to our facilities improves the situation for our coaches in recruiting quality student-athletes.”
Watch for special updates on each effort on GoBearkats.com and Sam Houston social media as well as opportunities for all alumni, fans and friends to help the program grow stronger through the Bearkat Champions fund.
